Trend 1: Adding Cloud capability.
Trend 2: Data Warehouse as a Service (DWaaS)
Trend 3: integrate Big Data in to your DW
Trend 4: Implement Real-Time DW.
Let's drill into 2 and 4.
TWO: DWaaS can also be called Virtual Data Warehouse. This is like #1, but really, it's moving EVERYTHING to the cloud. You're still going to go through similar implementation, all the same equipment is required, but none of it is on-site. All equipment, upgrades, administration, and management are done by the DWaaS service company (like Azure). Long-term costs are higher. It's flexible architecture so growing capacity is simpler. Downside: if you end up needing to cut costs? you're stuck. All your data, and all the coding is "out there". There's never an on-prem component where you can just stare at all that beautiful data you paid for with blood, sweat, and dollars. Hybrid model is the best of both worlds, if that's your concern. Data lives at home and is supercharged by the cloud.
FOUR: Real-Time DW is when you want Analytical insights AS the new Data Arrives. Notification and Triggers occur as they happen. Ever received a shipping update when the product was nearly delivered or delayed? Data Trigger. This is pretty powerful stuff and a key superpower when coupled with Big Data (trend 3) integration.
